With just three months to go before the Christmas holidays, if you’re eyeing off a festive getaway the time to book is now.

Christmas is the most popular time of year to travel, meaning it’s also the most expensive. However, if you’re planning on spending December 25th somewhere warmer and splashier, then these tips could just help to save you hundreds.

Expedia Australia’s Alex Ozdowski says the most important factor in getting a good deal during this exxy period is being flexible.

“If you’re flexible with your destination you can find some amazing prices,” he tells 9News.

The key “festive peak” dates to avoid is any day between December 17 and January 7 – and doing so can save you big bucks.

For example, jetting off for a Fijian Christmas around mid to early December will get you return flights from $643.

Accommodation rates also skyrocket over the holiday season, but if you choose your destination wisely you could shave hundreds off your holiday bill.

If you’re after a bargain, you’d do well to base your holiday around one of three Aussie destinations – research shows you can book a hotel in Cairn, South West Rocks, and Airlie Beach for under $300 a night.

Scott’s Cheap Flights’ Nicole Renker says departing and returning at the least in-demand travel times will also slash the price of your airfares.

“Christmas Day or New Year’s Eve will be a cheaper time to fly, just because no one wants to be on an aeroplane celebrating New Year’s.”
